Rip currents generally flow in the opposite direction to the rest of the water on a beach, so can pull you sideways along the beach or out to sea. It is pointless to swim against one so swim parallel to shore to escape the rip, then back towards the shore. There is a new rip current in the centre of Spanish Point beach. Ask the advice of the Lifeguards at all beaches. In Spanish Pt swim in front of the Lifeguard hut but not too close to the rocks, or between the flags if the Lifeguards are on duty.
