8 easy ways to stoke your fire (AGNI)
1. The simplest way to maintain your Agni is to always make sure your previous meal has been digested before eating again, ie eat when you are hungry.
2. If you generally have a low appetite only eat small meals to gently stoke the fire without smothering it with a heavy meal.
3. Avoid foods that are excessively heavy, cold or wet. Also do not aggravate the fire with foods that are too spicy, oily or fried.
4. Fasting: This naturally allows the fire to increase in the stomach. Don’t fast for too long as the fire will start to consume the tissues.
5. Sip hot water throughout the day (add lemon or ginger for extra benefit)
6. If your appetite is low take something that will increase the heat or activity in your stomach. Flavours that enhance Agni are pungent, sour & salty eg ginger, cayenne pepper, Trikatu, black pepper, cinnamon, lemon, black salt or himalyan pink salt, etc (Try to do this 30 minutes before eating)
7. Take a bitter herb like gentian (Gentiana lutea) directly before you eat to increase the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
8. Exercise is another good way of increasing your digestive fire.
