Planning approval for €40 million Killaloe bypass
THE compulsory purchase of land for a new bridge across the Shannon to facilitate the Killaloe bypass is about to get under way as a result of An Bord Pleanala's decision to approve the €40 million project.
Following the planning appeal board's ruling, Clare county council announced that it is to start the design process on the scheme which involves a single carriageway bypass of Killaloe; a 170 metre bridge across the Shannon and an upgrade of the existing R494 regional road in Ballina on the Tipperary side of the river. The council indicated that the next stage of the process will be to appoint consultants to deal with detailed design requirements, the tendering of the scheme and all subsequent stages through to the final construction. The Council will also be pursuing acquisition of the lands to which a Compulsory Purchase Order applies in due course.
Welcoming the announcement, Mayor of Clare Pat Daly said it was a significant project for East Clare in terms of the economic and social benefits it will bring to the people who live, work in and visit the area. He described it as "one of the biggest infrastructure projects to be undertaken in the Region during the next decade.”
Clare County Council engineer Tom Tiernan, who will manage the project, said it would deliver improved connectivity between the wider East Clare area and the national motorway network as well as erase the traffic bottleneck that has developed in Killaloe/Ballina over the years.
He added that it would eliminate dependency on the existing substandard Shannon River crossing at Killaloe in terms of its lack of capacity to handle current traffic demands.
"The project will facilitate the Killaloe/Ballina, East Clare and North Tipperary areas to develop further both commercially and from an industrial point of view. It will also ensure that the region, including Lough Derg, becomes much more accessible and marketable as a tourism destination. Furthermore, the reduction in traffic volumes through Killaloe/Ballina will improve residential amenity in the community", Mr Tiernan said.
