Preparations for the fourth annual Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk are ramping up with the announcement that Specsavers have seen fit to come on board as sponsor for the breast cancer charity walk.
Nicola Wood, pictured above at the launch of the June 9 walk from Killaloe to Ballina, is hoping the event will prove as popular as ever in its endeavours to raise money and awareness for the cancer that touches so many families throughout the Mid-West.
“Women have a one in ten chance of developing breast cancer. We hope to raise awareness, offer support and hopefully to help find a cure for breast cancer,” said Ms Wood.
“By joining the Pink Ribbon Walk movement, you help raise funds for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society that supports families through this stressful time and to help them cope with the practical problems that a cancer diagnosis can bring,” she added.
The Killaloe walk has so far raised €215,000 and they hope to raise €100,000 from this year’s walk.
“We have a lot of people who have had breast cancer themselves who walk and people who have lost friends and family to breast cancer. So it’s a very emotional day and it’s more about that than the actual walk. The whole community gets involved and with us being on the border of Limerick, Tipperary and Clare we look to represent the three counties,” said Ms Wood.
